What Is Medicare?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program designed primarily for people age 65 and older.

Medicare may also provide coverage for certain people under age 65 who have qualifying disabilities and people of any age with End-Stage Renal Disease.

Medicare is not one plan that covers every healthcare expense. Instead, it consists of several different parts. Each part helps cover specific services, and understanding how those parts work is an important first step when considering your healthcare coverage.

Why attend Medicare 101? Medicare terminology, enrollment periods and coverage options can feel complicated. This free webinar will explain the fundamentals in clear, easy-to-understand language.

Understanding Your Coverage

What Are the Different Parts of Medicare?

Medicare is divided into different parts based on the types of services covered. The Medicare 101 webinar will explain how these parts differ and how they may work together.

Medicare Part A

Medicare Part A is commonly known as hospital insurance. For many eligible people, Part A does not require a monthly premium because they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working.

Part A may help cover:
  • Inpatient hospital care
  • Short-term skilled nursing facility care
  • Hospice care
  • Limited home healthcare services

Medicare Part B

Medicare Part B is commonly known as medical insurance. Part B generally requires a monthly premium and helps cover medically necessary services received outside an inpatient hospital stay.

Part B may help cover:
  • Doctor visits
  • Outpatient medical care
  • Laboratory tests and X-rays
  • Preventive healthcare services
  • Physical and occupational therapy
  • Certain home healthcare services

Medicare Part C

Medicare Part C is also known as Medicare Advantage. These plans are offered through private insurance companies approved by Medicare and provide Part A and Part B coverage.

Some plans may also include:
  • Prescription drug coverage
  • Dental benefits
  • Vision benefits
  • Hearing benefits
  • Fitness or wellness programs

Medicare Part D

Medicare Part D helps cover prescription medications. Part D plans are offered through private insurance companies and generally require a monthly premium.

Important Part D considerations:
  • Each plan has a list of covered medications
  • The covered drug list is called a formulary
  • Premiums and out-of-pocket costs vary
  • Pharmacy networks may differ between plans
  • Late-enrollment penalties may apply
